Silversmith Classes

The Studio
My silversmith studio is a specially fitted out silversmith workshop with all the tools & equipment you would expect for metal working. Set in the beautiful Dorset countryside next to Puddletown Forest, I'm lucky enough to have stunning views over the countryside & a private patio area where we can enjoy lunch or a tea break outside during the summer.

Weekly Classes
My weekly classes are run in 12 weeks terms, each class is 3 hours long, and class sizes are limited to just 6 people. This ensures that I have ample opportunity for one-to-one tuition with everyone. The classes are designed to allow maximum flexibility for students’ creativity: I do not provide set lessons and encourage students to choose and make their own designs & pieces of jewellery. You can bring along your own ideas & I have plenty of photos, books & magazines which you can look through for inspiration. I will then guide you through all the processes and techniques involved. You will use a wide range of different tools for different purposes such as soldering, piercing, reticulating & stone setting, and you will come away with new creative and practical skills as well as your own beautiful pieces of jewellery!

Saturday Workshops
Our Saturday workshops are one-off full day classes, running from 10am until 4pm and are limited to 4 - 6 people, depending on the type of workshop. Workshops are structured around a given theme or process such as: silver casting, silver clay, screen printing onto Polymer Clay or making a silver ring or bangle. You are free to be as creative as you like & make whichever designs & pieces you wish, fitting in with the theme of the day. At the end of a Saturday workshop everyone goes home with at least 1 piece of finished jewellery polished & ready to wear & there is sometimes time for you to make a second or third piece, depending on the complexity of your chosen design. See the Saturday Workshop Dates page for Saturday workshop dates & availability.

Prices
A term of 12 weeks of classes costs £300 & must be paid for in advance. The Saturday workshops costs from £75 per person (this will be increasing to £90 from winter 2024) not including materials & must be paid for in full in advance to secure your place. I have a stock of silver, brass, copper & a small amount of gold at the studio but please let me know at least a week in advance if you’d like any specific materials ordered in for you to use. As a rough guide a silver stack ring will cost around £5 & silver wire bangles start from about £15.

Refunds
If we can replace you we will either refund you or you can move to another workshop date, with places available, for a £10 administration fee.
The sooner you let us know if you can't make it to a Saturday workshop or a 12 week block the more time we'll have to find someone to fill your place. Most of the time we're able to do this & we will then refund you the amount you have paid minus a £10 admin charge, or we can arrange for you to come to a different workshop date for a £10 admin charge.
Please note, occasionally we are unable to find a replacement & therefore no refund & no other workshop dates will be offered.
The only exception is for gift vouchers - these can only be used on a workshop of your choice, we can't offer refunds on gift vouchers.

What You need to Bring
We provide tea, coffee and biscuits on the day but you’re welcome to bring a snack or lunch with you. There are basic kitchen facilities available in the studio that you are welcome to use. You will also need to bring some cash to pay for any materials you use, or a smartphone which allows you to do a bank transfer. Please don’t bring along any tools or toolboxes as we provide all the equipment & tools that you will need.
